Bamboo Fishing at Travaasa Hana

Bamboo Fishing at Travaasa Hana

The simple pleasures of paradise: our gorgeous Hana Bay, a bamboo pole, fishing line, hook and a little bait is all you need for an afternoon of fun in the sun. Travaasa Hana’s fishing master, Andrew Park, loves to share this timeless craft with our guests. “I just got these poles the other day. I hiked up to this special place by O’heo Gorge in the mountains where my dad used to take me as a child, to find just the right pieces of bamboo for this,” says Andrew as he shows off the approximately 10 foot long fishing rods. “My father helped me get them ready. We trimmed the branches and then had to spin them through fire and rub them with heat to help strengthen and straighten them out.”   Andrew goes on to demonstrate how...

Pig Roasts and Mai Tais: Planning the Perfect Hawaiian BBQ

Pig Roasts and Mai Tais: Planning the Perfect Hawaiian BBQ

A Hawaiian luau offers a blend of Hawaiian, Polynesian and Asian-influenced flavors, so gather your friends in your backyard and get your pigs ready for a Hawaiian style roast during National BBQ Month. Preparing the menu is essential to the authenticity of a Hawaiian BBQ.  The traditional Kalua pork, which translates as “the hole,” is cooked underground. Traditionally it is seasoned with sea salt, garlic cloves, green onions and sweet potatoes.  Also a great Hawaiian staple to accompany the dish is poi: starch dish made by pounding boiled taro roots and mixing with water until it reaches a smooth consistency. Fill the air with traditional Hawaiian slack key guitar or Hawaiian style reggae.  You can have loose flowers on hand for your guests to tuck behind...

May Lei Celebration at Travaasa Hana

May Lei Celebration at Travaasa Hana

Experiencing the real Hawaii. That’s what Travaasa Hana is all about. Our guests are introduced to the art and history of lei making at all times during the year. But in May, Hawaii’s traditional gift of welcome and aloha truly take center stage. Lei Day – May first – became an official holiday in 1929. It was invented by Don Blanding, who is considered by many to be the poet laureate of Hawaii. He wanted to create a uniquely Hawaiian event that celebrated the culture and beauty of the islands. Lei Day celebrations continue today, marking the first day of May with lei-making competitions, concerts, and the giving and receiving of lei among friends and family. “It is really a big deal all over the islands,” says Hoku Tolentino, programs manager at...

East Maui Taro Festival – April 20, 2013

East Maui Taro Festival – April 20, 2013

This Saturday residents and visitors of Hana will flock to the 21st annual East Maui Taro Festival, a long standing tradition of the island. From 9am to 5pm festival goers will enjoy non-stop Hawaiian entertainment and hula, 20 food booths, 40 arts and crafts booths, a farmers market and hands-on cultural demos such as poi-pounding, kapa cloth making, creating Hawaiin musical instruments and luahala weaving. Taro, primarily grown as a root vegetable for its edible starchy corm, represents the origin of the Hawaiian people and is the staple of the Hawaiian people. It is believed to have the greatest life force of all foods. Thus, the festival originators decided to use the vegetable as the focus of the festival to draw the people of Hana together for a common...
