On May 2, Travaasa Hana’s executive chef, Derek Watanabe, and local culinary stars, Lee Anne Wong, Isaac Bancaco and James Simpliciano created an unforgettable “poi supper” incorporating taro into each of the dinner’s four courses. The sold-out event was held at the awe-inspiring Kahanu Garden and benefited I am Haloa, a film documentary chronicling three high school seniors committed to cultivating, harvesting and eating taro for three meals a day.

Guests enjoyed a tour of the gardens before enjoying a four-course, family style meal beneath the stars. Joel Katz provided live musical entertainment throughout the evening and Daniel Anthony, kalo activist and “I am Haloa” film subject and consultant, demonstrated talk story and traditional poi pounding.
